Solving Word Puzzles - Five Fast Tips

Any clue-based word puzzle, such as a crossword, can present big challenges to even the most experienced puzzle-solver among us. As a long-time puzzle writer, I'd like to share a few tips from the inside.

1. Many meaning words

Just one simple word can have a myriad of meanings. Fair can mean 1) pleasing to the eye or mind--a fair maiden 2) not stormy--fair weather 3) impartial--a fair judge 4) not dark--a fair complexion 5) enough but not ample--a fair amount of food in the fridge 6) a conferrence of buys and sellers--an ancient fair 7) a carnival--the county fair 8) a batted baseball within the foul lines--a fair ball, and many more.

So when you encounter a difficult crossword clue, consider that the rejoinder may be a word you already know but with a meaning that is uncommon. Can you guess a singular rejoinder for these clues? Hint: It has 7 letters.

Clue: a long, relatively narrow room, esp. One for public use; an decorative railing or cresting surrounding the top of a table, stand, desk, etc.; a passageway made by an animal. (Read on for the answer...)

2. Spelling

Double-check the spelling of tricky words. Suppose the clue is humiliate, for example. You conclude the rejoinder is embarrass. But the puzzle requires a 9-letter answer, and so you start racking your brain for a dissimilar word. A quick check of the dictionary or spell check will tell you that embarrass does indubitably have 9 letters!

3. Consult a reference book

If you get indubitably stuck, look up words and definitions in a dictionary, crossword puzzle dictionary, thesaurus, almanac or any of a zillion online resources. Some puzzlers think this is "cheating," but if you peak at the rejoinder key instead, what do you call that? Using a reference book in itself is an educational exercise. And it's not always easy to know where to look, so it does take brains to do the research.

4. Take a break

When a puzzle wholly befuddles you, walk away. Move on to a different, easier puzzle, feed the dog, or go for a walk. A relaxed brain often finds answers more indubitably than one that has been strained for a long duration of time.

5. Keep at it

Don't quit! The more word puzzles you solve the more you can solve. You'll increase your vocabulary and learn the tricks that discrete puzzle writers employ. If you find a singular puzzle format you indubitably like, solve a lot of them. But also try new formats. Research has shown that brain health is improved when we try new things.

Do Crossword Puzzles and Bridge supply all the Brain exercise You Need?

This is a query we often get asked in our classes and lectures.

The quick reply is that while recreational activities like crossword puzzles, sudoku, bridge, chess, poker, etc. Are all good for you and better than doing nothing, they are ordinarily diminutive in their range of thinking cross-training as well as difficult to operate to ensure the right mixture of both challenge and novelty.

If you do them often, what you're doing is fun and can't hurt. But it may not be complete. Modern recommendations made by a panel of experts reviewing a poll by the American community on Aging stated "A particular activity, no matter how challenging, is not sufficient to preserve the kind of thinking acuity that virtually everyone can achieve."

Using your brain to solve creative challenges is perfect custom and will help slow down the effects of aging. The limitation with your current brain workout schedule is that it does not have sufficient variety or novelty to work out all your thinking muscles. Have you ever seen the guys in the gym with the buff upper bodies supported by diminutive chicken legs? The same thing can happen in your brain. Just as you cross-train in your corporal fitness disposition (mixing cardio with power training and flexibility) to get a balanced workout, you need to cross-train your thinking fitness to practice your brain through motor coordination, emotional understanding, memory, focus and attention, sensory processes, communication, language skills, and thinking visualization.

Furthermore, how can you gauge your improvement if you don't have a way to part it? Using computer software to give you a baseline score, workout routines for your brain, and consequent up tests gives you a part of your improvement. So basically, right now you may be doing a very focused workout using language and memory but with inconsistent challenge and diminutive feedback. A structured schedule should give you assessment, novelty, and performance-based challenge while still being fun. That extra thinking stimulation can growth the rate of neurogenesis, or the creation of new neurons and the connections in the middle of neurons.

A randomized controlled double-blind study published in August 2006 "demonstrates that intensive, plasticity-engaging training can consequent in an enhancement of cognitive function in general mature adults." provocative cognitive function leads to learning and neurogenesis. So keep doing crosswords and sudoku, especially if you enjoy them, but don't neglect the rest of your brain!

Conclusion: Do activities you enjoy, but be sure to do things that challenge you with new and separate types of stimulation.

Word search Puzzles Kids Can Make

Kids like to keep busy. Make sure yours have options other than the television and video games! development word quest puzzles for friends and family is one great hobby. But your kids don't have to make lowly puzzles with a random set of words. Use one of the ideas below for a puzzle with a twist! Kids can learn new words, custom their spelling, make cool gifts, and have fun while development these puzzles.

Puzzle Basics:

First, buy a packet of graph paper at your local office contribute store. Purchase graph paper with 4 squares per inch, for kids ages 8 and up. By beginning in one angle of a paper, you can make any puzzles from a singular page. One packet of graph paper can last for months! all the time think about who will be receiving/solving the puzzle before you make it. Pick easy words for young solvers and bigger words for older friends

A. Use Only One Word

Choose a word of interest to the man who receives it. Suppose, for example, that Grandma has apple decorations all over her kitchen. Your puzzle word could be Apple. Make a rectangular puzzle that is about 12 x 12 squares. Write the word Apple inside in separate directions about 4 or 5 times. Then fill the blank spaces with A, P, L, E until all the spaces are full. Cut out the puzzle. Glue it onto a piece of red building paper cut in the shape of an apple. Then ask Grandma, "How many times can you find the word Apple?" She will be delighted, to the core! You can think of lots more fun words like this to hide.

B. Theme-based puzzles

Choose a topic of interest to the man who will be receiving the puzzle. For example, if Grandpa loves to garden, use gardening or vegetables as the topic. Brainstorm to make a list of both long and short words related to the theme. For gardening, list soil, seed, plant, hoe, weeds, tomatoes, cucumber, radish, rain, sun and more. Place the words in a rectangular space of graph paper. Place the longest words first. resolve how large the puzzle will be and make sure your words fit inside that space. Make a list of the words as you hide them. Double-check the puzzle. Make your puzzle into a gift. Type the letters and word list on the computer and add some thorough clip art. Or naturally cut out the puzzle from the graph paper page, glue it onto a blank page, and write the word list on that paper. Tuck the puzzle inside a card or just hand it to the lucky recipient.

C. Word List Twists

Choose an captivating theme, make a word list, and then use only half the words in the puzzle. I once made a puzzle about roses for a newspaper. I called it "A Thorny Puzzle." I included a list of 22 words related to roses and then asked the solvers which 11 of these words were literally in the puzzle. Or, write a listless word search. For Grandpa's vegetable puzzle, for example, you could hide the names of ten vegetables and not tell him which ones they are.

Your puzzle-writers just might come up with their own creative twist on the popular word quest puzzle format. Maybe they will even start compiling their own word lists to use in the future. And they just might get the same puzzle-writing itch that this author has had since she was eight years old!

Are Crossword Puzzles enough to Boost Your Brain Power?

You may have heard that solving crossword puzzles daily is a great way to advance your brain cells. It is sure to be helpful. But scientists have also learned that the brain needs new experiences to be at its best. Merely doing the same thing over and over is not as sufficient as you might think.

Sharpbrains.com is a research and advisory firm dedicated to helping individuals, fellowships and condition providers stay on top of the most recent research in brain fitness. Their site gives this marvelous advice:

He believes that when we go straight through the same routines day after day, the brain performance required to do these tasks positively decreases. But when we engage in new activities, or even changes in our routines, we are triggering parts of the brain that weren't used before. This creates "enhanced performance in the brain."

RevolutionHealth.com has compiled a list of recommendations from neuroscientists on the best activities to boost our brain health. Among the recommendations: activities should teach you something new, they should be challenging, they should be progressively more difficult, and they should be rewarding.

So how do crossword puzzles fit in? If you are doing crossword puzzles that are increasingly difficult and if you find it rewarding, your pastime may be beneficial. But if you are repeatedly solving "Easy Crosswords" from the newsstand and you find it to be tedious, the benefit may be limited.

What should you do if you positively love word puzzles, but you want more brain stimulation than you're receiving from your crosswords? Try something new! Try other clue-based and wordplay puzzles. Try logic puzzles. Try estimate puzzles. Try whatever that is fun, fascinating and new.

I have always treated and considered puzzles from an educational standpoint, for the reason that they constitute a species of mental gymnastics which sharpen the wits and train the mind to reason along straight lines. Puzzles are a school for cleverness and ingenuity.
