Brain Training - Does it Work?

,

Nowadays you get overrun by Iq and brain training websites and games. Of course this is a lucrative business since everybody, young or old, male or female, black or white wants to be smart. Brain training is supposed to make you smarter and above all is fun! But is this positively the case? The fun part of course is a pure personal thought however does brain training positively make you smarter?

At first we should take into catalogue that your Iq is commonly acceptable as a portion of your intelligence, "how smart you are" so to say. If you would do several Iq-tests your Iq will all the time be more or less the same. At least this is how it should work, however an growth or decrease in Iq of as high as 20 points while a lifetime is not fully uncommon even without taking aging diseases e.g. Alzheimer into account. So this means you can be either more or less exciting while certain periods of your life.

A lot of investigate to this branch has been done and one of the most exciting experiments was carried out for the first time in the 1950s, by the Canadian psychologist Professor Donald Hebb and it was repeated again in 2008 by Professor Ian Robbins. In this experiment several volunteers were left alone in the dark in solitary confinement for 48 hours. This already proved to be adequate to decrease some volunteers Iq-test outcomes by more than 20 points, showing the subjects brain is adjusting to the situation. Simply put: "They don't use their brain so it starts deteriorating". Of course this is an extreme example since the subjects were fully deprived of sensory stimulation, but the fact that the subjects regained their "intelligence" after a while in the real world is very interesting. This shows that by stimulating the brain the subjects positively got smarter again.

This makes you wonder: "What if you have a dull job which does not stimulate your brain at all? Would your brain adjust to this situation too? Would you positively get dumber since you are not using your brain for 8 or more hours a day?" investigate to these effects is way more complicated because of the large scale at which experiments will have to be performed to get trustable results. however finding at the results of the sensory deprivation experiments one would come to the logical conclusion that you have to train your brain to keep it in shape. This is what goes for your entire body e.g. Muscles, organs, so why would your brain be any different?

Brain Training and Mind Games - Interview With Japanese master Go Hirano

,

Today we are traveling to Japan to learn about newest gaming trends there. Go Hirano is a Japanese menagerial with palpate in neuroscience and gaming.

Alvaro Fernandez (Af): Hirano-san, what is the state of Brain Fitness and Brain Training in Japan? what are the most favorite programs so far?

Go Hirano (Gh): So far, the most favorite application is anti-aging, and most favorite goods is Dr. Kawashima's book of calculations and oral reading for adults.

Tv collection shows usually come up with Brain specials. It is hardly deniable that brains enchant Japanese people. We love brain training.

There were two times of "brain boom" in the past and Brain Imaging created a third one most recently. Dr. Kawashima claimed calculations and oral reading are good to establish kids' brains in the book for children "Jibun no Nou wo Jibun de Sodateru (Develop your own brain)" in 2001. In the book, gaming was said to sell out prefrontal activation and have bad or no benefit for kid's brain. He compared the fMri image of person doing uncomplicated calculations and playing games, and apparently the image of the previous showed more activities. To see the activities inside the brain was fresh for people, but the methodology and logic was not reviewed by any scientific publication. It was published by a firm that provides a franchised chain of learning classes. The firm maintained books at bookstores to originate a boom and was very successful. Then they came up with adult version of training book, and sold more than 2 million.

Adults and senior citizen were seriously did expanding and subtraction of 1 digit numbers for countless times believing it will declare and even improve their brainpower.

This then became the basis for the Nintendo Brain Age video game. More recently from him, cooking became good for brain since cooking demands planning and multiple tasks. They interrogate prefrontal cortex activation, and he showed image of a brain when cooking. A gas firm that wants to sell more gas ranges and ovens helped sponsor the research.

Af: we have heard there has been a backlash recently. Is it more of a scientific, or consumer one?

Gh: Scientific for adults' games, consumer for kids' ones. In 2001, other researcher, Dr. Akio Mori wrote an record called "Gemu(=Game) Nou(=Brain) no Kyofu (The Fear of Game Brain)". He created his own Eeg motor and gathered the data of citizen who frequently play games and citizen who do not. He found the "beta-wave" from frequent game players that are "same as senior citizen with dementia". That, he said, is because of lack of activities in their prefrontal cortex, and that means more probabilities for lower schoraly performance and crime. Though his tool was not verified, and he was said to get confused about alpha and beta wave of Eeg, parents and schooling authorities like municipal schooling committees loved his book and invited him for lectures and conferences. His new book in 2006 became the recommended book of the year from the National Pta Committee.

The sales of software on home game machines have declined from its peak of 533 billion yen in 1997 to its 53%, 315 billion yen in 2005. Dr. Mori's book and phenomena was the finishing blow to the industry, especially for kids' games. Therefore game companies had to find new targets who had never played game machines, like middle-aged group and women. Brain Age was preceded by a Sega's game box that was the natural next step after the book from Dr. Kawashima I mentioned.

For women, games on English training, language withhold for traveling, cooking, common sense and etiquette are provided. These new sort of serious games not only helped the handheld game motor stay all the time out of stock and reach multi-million sales, but also successfully gave the image that games are, depending on the software, good for the brain and education. Funny it is that the authority backing the campaign is the same Dr. Kawashima who originally recommended kids to reckon rather than to play games for the benefit for brains.

No wonder, authorities from the schoraly and healing societies of the neuroscience field started criticizing scientifically unproven or no evidence-based products, books and thought makers. This year, neuroscience researchers started a group called "Nou wo Ikasu (Make the best out of Neuroscience)" and have frequent meetings of researchers where citizen can join.

However, adult consumers keep devouring such games. Dentsu, the biggest advertising branch announced the No.1 Consumer-chosen choice of the goods 2006 was game software and books for brain training. So far, apparently the demands went far out before the real neuroscience comes to fill. Between the equilibrium of body and brain, Japanese citizen are one of the greatest that is most brain-ism oriented, to the brain side, says Dr. Yoro.

Af: Hirano-san, many thanks for your insights.

Gh: you are welcome.

Free Brain Training for Adhd

,

Brain training can heighten the attention, memory and processing speed problems of Adhd. Brain or cognitive training may also turn the neurotransmitter functions in our Adhd brain for the better. The emerging field of brain plasticity has been learning the effects of brain training on the anatomy and physiology of our brain and has discovered some excellent findings.

Cognitive training will not only make our Adhd brains function better, it will also fine tune our brains for great future functioning. Scientist used to description that we were born with only a microscopic amount of brain cells and as we aged we lost more and more cells and the thought was that this cell loss led to eventual memory loss and dementia. What we now know is that the brain is just like the muscles in our bodies. You only lose brain function if you do not use your brain.

We are finding out that we must "use it or lose it" but that there are many ways to enlarge the connections and heighten our Adhd and Add brains. We know that cognitive training helps but we also know that doing puzzles, learning a new hobby, conversing with people, reading books or learning a new skill or language also helps.

There is not one good way to enlarge our brains, there are many ways. Aerobic exercises such as brisk walking and anaerobic exercises such as weigh lifting have also been found to help our brain function. Our memories function infinitely great if we have slept for at least 8 hours, the food we eat will affect how well we think and a diet rich in anti-oxidants is ideal for optimal brain functioning.

For habitancy with Add to function at their top level, cognitive training should be added to the regimen of:
Daily Exercise Proper Sleep Hygiene, and A well rounded, anti-oxidant rich Diet

Some of the areas of Adhd brain weaknesses that cognitive training can help are as follows:

• Attention/Concentration, the quality to screen out distractions and stay on task
• Memory: The quality to recall short or long term information.
• Processing Speed: The quality to cope and process data quickly.
• Reading comprehension, phonemic awareness and Visualization (seeing a problem in the mind's eye before attempting to solve) can also be problematic

Below is a list of online sites with free cognitive or brain training exercises. I have tried to quote the areas of brain strengthening that each rehearsal helps.

At the website: Brain Metrix: The Memory Section This game from Game Metrix is the first-rate memory puzzle but it is timed and you need to unblemished in less than 90 seconds so it works on both working memory and on processing speed.

At the website: Brain Metrix: The attentiveness section This game requires strategy, focus and attentiveness and it is fun to design strategies to enable you to "zero" out the graph. Start at the 'huh duh' level because it is not at all easy!!

Sharp Brains Website

This site has several areas that are helpful for the Adhd brain. I would focus on the memory game section, attentiveness game section and optical brain teasers section is where I would start on this page.

BrainWorksho Website

This site has the Dual-N-Back game. Acccording to this site, "A modern study published in an prominent scientific journal, shows that a single memory task called dual n-back may unquestionably heighten workingmemory (short term memory) and fluid intelligence." They also description that, "Anecdotal evidence suggests that the dual n-back task also enhances focus and attentiveness and may help heighten the symptoms of Adhd/Add."

The instructions on how to play the Dual N-Back game are also on the Brainworkshop page and I propose that you read this before beginning with the Dual N-Back brain training.

Brain training can help the memory and attentiveness problems seen in habitancy with Adhd. There are many free programs online that help can help habitancy with Adhd enlarge these cognitive weaknesses. Adults and children with Adhd would benefit from training with these free resources for 25 minutes daily. I think you will find these games helpful and fun so visit the free online sites and get started soon!

All the free links are ready on my webpage under the link that is labeled, "Free Adhd Stuff"
